Adapted from Cormac McCarthy’s award-winning novel, All the Pretty Horses cries for epic length but runs only 112 minutes for theatrical release. Drastically shortened during a lengthy stretch between production and release, this operatic drama feels as if huge chunks are missing, and what remains are fragments of a masterpiece that might have been. Unless a more definitive version is revealed, we must settle for this faint echo of McCarthy’s ambitious narrative, in which dispossessed Texas rancher John Grady Cole (Matt Damon) ventures to Mexico in 1949 to revive his fading dreams of cowboy glory. With best friend Lacey Rawlins (Henry Thomas), Cole’s odyssey takes him from youthful idealism to rugged, often horrific, and ultimately ennobling tests of integrity.
Much of Cole’s ordeal is sparked by his forbidden love for Alejandra (Penelope Cruz), the beautiful daughter of his Mexican employer, whose family honor is threatened by their mutual attraction. A gunslinging teenager (Lucas Black) casts a black cloud over them all, and All the Pretty Horses becomes a test of Cole’s ability to navigate a labyrinth of distorted truth, imprisonment, and hard-fought redemption. All of which begs for emotional depth and carefully developed characters, but this truncated film lacks both. Scenes jump from one to the next with obvious gaps between them, lending no opportunity for emotional investment. It’s clear that director Billy Bob Thornton is attempting to redefine the Western, and the effort is laudable on many points, notably in its perfect match of visuals and a flavorful musical score. There’s much to admire in this film, making its shortcomings all the more lamentable. –Jeff Shannon

Movie Title: Up Up is available for streaming or downloading. |
Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), mature Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me shout.

I plan it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a timid young boy star-struck by a renowned explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become swiftly friends, and whine to one day depart to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they choose their dream home and fix it up, hoping to occupy it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through former age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a gay marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s injure when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.
When developers halt in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and fade to Paradise Falls. A venerable balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of vivid balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a paunchy, fearless kid trying to score a scouting badge.

After landing in Paradise Falls, the worn man and the microscopic boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a grand rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of terminate calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.
In the process, Carl learns to let go of his gloomy mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by comely hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole novel world.
Up is a deeply emotional film, beefy of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Accumulate another triumph for Pixar.
Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to fabricate an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster gripping movie. But in the meantime, they’re collected putting out appetizing intelligent movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety ancient man. It’s a charming, fun dinky adventure fable with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet petite narrative about loss and fancy.
As a child, the worried Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared appreciate of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, disappear into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.
Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a steady estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an eager, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the promenade. Abominable kid was honest trying to secure an “assisting the elderly” badge.
And the jungle ride to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a enormous emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious passe man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the stale guy is very familiar to Carl — and to catch Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.
Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as common as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty used coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can be pleased Carl’s esteem for his lost wife, and his lifeless realization that he’s clinging to the past.
In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they prove all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing faded together, and finally loss.
But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy arrive to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of sizable dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Observe Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Wintry! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an passe airship.
Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and distinct to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is definite to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special behold. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I worship you”) and act the contrivance dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.
The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to regain shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of unique stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.
There are also a pair of adorable lively shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to recount potentially improper baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.
“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously enchanting, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can devour. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

Movie Title: Batman Begins Batman Begins is available for streaming or downloading. |
After years of not having a Batman film and mostly due to the franchise hitting bottom thanks to Joel Schumacher’s disastrous “Batman forever” and “Batman and Robin”, Christopher Nolan demonstrate us his version of the character with an impressive all star cast anda narrative brilliantly written by David S. Goyer.

The film
There were high expectations for this film before its release as if would it be as suited as Burton’s films, the truth is, there are no points to compare, Nolan and Burton visions are quite different from each other, but both respect the origins and essence of who the character is.

Goyer took some liberties in the storytelling that could be considered as unforgivable by many fans (Bruce’s parents are originally killed after seeing “Ticket of Zorro” at the movie theater, a fact that marks Bruce’s mind with the plan of a masked vigilante) but also hints at stuff that the previous versions let pass unnoticed, the main focus of this film are the origins of Batman and his training to become what he ultimately is. Even though the detective portion of Bruce’s training is not even mentioned, the twist in which Ra’s Al Ghul (Liam Neeson) is the one who trained him in the ninja arts and theatricality unprejudiced makes their conflict more appetizing and intriguing. Cameos and appearances of characters from the amusing book are also well conventional, justified and well-known to the sage (Carmine Falcone and killer Zsaz)
The record uses the two villains exactly as they would act in the silly book, Ra’s Al Ghul with his constant desire to residence thing upright his blueprint and Jonathan Crane (Cillian Murphy) working and experimenting with the thing he enjoys the most: terror. Even though the Scarecrow is totally the opposite of the amusing book (in the comical Jonathan Crane is an outmoded and repugnant doctor who was fired from Gotham University for experimenting on the students with his gas of horror), the character presented keeps the essence and motives that the modern character has, unlike the Riddler, Mr Freeze, Two Face or Poison Ivy in Schumacher’s dreadful versions.
A original Gotham city is presented, considerable more like a NY city style, a modern Batmobile (not as care for as the previous ones but quite impressive) and a whole place of characters we interrogate to observe in future releases, James Gordon (Gary Oldman who amazingly looks exactly as Jim in the droll), Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), Jonathan Crane, Carmine Falcone and Ra’s Al Ghul.
Masterfully executed by the whole cast and brilliantly directed by Nolan, there are many of us looking forward for a sequel to this film.
The extras
Disc one contains Mtv’s “Tankman Begins”, a spoof we could have lived without but without any doubt a collector’s share for all Mtv fans.
Disc two contains a residence of documentaries related to all aspects of production and shooting of the film, from the early beginnings in Nolan’s washing room until the shooting of some of the most difficult sequences of the film. The disc 2 is organized in a comical book-like format which makes it a dinky difficult to follow as many things are like hidden, but if you go until the demolish of the short and pointless myth, you will fetch a list with all documentaries available. One of the documentaries called “Genesis of the bat” presents humorous book artist related to Batman talking about the character and film, from Dennis O’Neil to Jim Lee. I am distinct this will be a allotment fans of the amusing book will like. All extras are top-notch of watching and I strongly recommend the 2 disc status, it is a 5 o 6 dollar inequity that will compensate with all the facts and items found in the bonus materials.
***BluRay review***
I had already written a review for this film when the two-disc special edition was released on DVD, so I will not obtain into any details about how immense the movie is.
The treatment they gave to this release is fantastic, image looks titanic and colors are graceful, the high definition definitely makes a dissimilarity and ‘Batman Begins’ looks better than ever (simply check out the ice sequence between Bruce and Ducard)
I have seen threads with questions as to what exactly does the little edition space contains versus the regular single disc, so here are what I believe are the most valuable ones:
The Disc
The disc included here is the same disc they released separately:
* All the extras from the 2-disc DVD are included, the documentaries and the bad ‘Tankman Begins’
* The prologue to ‘The Dusky Knight’ in high definition (are we in for a treat when released on Bluray!) This is basically the bank robbery scene that opens the sequel.
The Extras
The USB with 18 the stills from ‘The Shadowy Knight’ included in the DVD version of the gift residence IS NOT INCLUDED in the Bluray gift set; don’t know what the reason is but it would have made sense to include it in both versions.
The postcards included are selections from the art created to promote ‘Batman Begins’, in my concept some of the images contemplate simple and overall they are not that substantial.
The two funny books included are a joke! One is a humorous book adaptation of the same 6 minutes prologue included in this edition (the bank robbery), the other one is the script with pictures of the same 6 exiguous prologue! I am a collector and tall fan of Batman and even I get this ridiculous and overpriced.
The $7.50 coupon to study ‘The Dismal Knight’ in theaters.
Bottom-line, I would give 3 stars to the BluRay release, not to the movie itself (which is huge and looks proper in HD) but to the release. I am having buyer’s remorse, don’t be fooled by what the product description says, it may sound attractive but had I known the extras would be as they are, I would have gone for the cheaper single disc edition.
Since his first dramatic appearance in Detective Comics in 1939, Batman has grown to become a pop-culture icon. From movie serials in the 40’s, to a classic campy TV present in the 60’s, to a solid appealing series in the 90’s, fans have thrilled to the well-kept heroics of this new character. However, as a film franchise, he has brought results that were somewhat less than impressive creatively. While the Tim Burton directed films, BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS were stylish and unlit, they also suffered from position holes you could drive a Batmobile through. Then Joel Schumacher introduced a Day-Glo sensibility to the Dismal Knight in BATMAN FOREVER, before drowning the character in ludicrous costumes (a Bat suit with nipples??? ), pun-filled foes, and whiney sidekicks in the lousy BATMAN & ROBIN. By then, Batman as cinematic property had become a laughingstock. Fortunately, indie film director Christopher Nolan reinvigorates the franchise in pleasing earn in BATMAN BEGINS, a reboot of the Batman myth that, for the first time, puts the focus squarely on our hero and not on the over-the-top villains of past films. Nolan also bases the film in a strong semblance of reality that allows the audience to not only derive the possibility of the winged vigilante, but embrace it as well.
Most fans already know the account of how wealthy Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) loses his parents when they are slain during an attempted robbery, but the movie also tells how he chose the bat as his symbol, as well as the steps needed to become the avenger of the night that he turns into. Disillusioned and frustrated by Gotham City’s sinful judicial system, the young Wayne goes abroad to notice the criminal mind. Later, while locked in an Asian prison, Wayne is recruited by the enigmatic Ducard (Liam Neeson), who offers him a path in which to focus his exasperate and hone his skills. Wayne eventually joins his unusual mentor as a recruit in the mysterious League of Shadows, headed by the irascible Ra’s Al Ghul (Ken Wantanabe) . Eventually, Wayne realizes that he cannot follow the League’s shameful methods of dispensing justice and returns to Gotham to forge his contain draw. It soon turns out that Wayne’s return is honest in time as Gotham falls prey to a dread epidemic engineered by the curved Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA “the Scarecrow” (Cillian Murphy) and a familiar figure from Wayne’s past.
From the top on down, this film is blessed with a solid cast that adds wonderfully to Nolan’s vision. As the title hero, Christian Bale blows all other Batman portrayers out of the water with his intense and scary recall of the role. This is a Batman that you not only dread, but can narrate to as well. In fact, he turns in the definitive performance. Michael Caine adds warmth and humor as Wayne’s genuine butler, Alfred. Liam Neeson does a gargantuan variation of his usual mentor roles as Ducard, a man with his contain surprising secret. As an assistant DA and Wayne’s childhood friend, Katie Holmes does a nice job with what is basically a thankless role. Cillian Murphy makes for a perfectly creepy Scarecrow, while Morgan Freeman is solid as usual as the man who provides Batman’s wondrous car and gadgets. Gary Oldman is wonderfully cast against type as Jim Gordon, one of Gotham’s few objective cops. The scene in which he drives the tank-like Batmobile is a sheer delight.
The screenplay by Nolan and David Goyer (who wrote the BLADE films) is awash with characterization and motivation…something that you don’t gawk in many comical book films as a rule. In fact, you obtain so engrossed by the proceedings that you almost forget that you are watching a “superhero” film in the first plot. The special effects are veteran to enhance the legend and not overpower it, while the plot gain pictures a Gotham that is a modern unsuitable of Chicago, Modern York and Hong Kong. If there is a flaw, it lies in some of the fight sequences. Done in close-ups and rapidly cuts, they can derive frustrating for those who want to observe more of Batman’s fighting style. However, this is very minor since the chronicle never ceases to capture your attention.
In the destroy, Nolan and his top-notch cast and crew succeed in achieving what was once conception impossible: the resurrection of a film franchise that, if not uninteresting, was at least on life succor. As a result, Batman is once again flying high and BATMAN BEGINS is a film that I wholeheartedly recommend.
